Days of Action to Defend Public Education in Wisconsin

Saturday, June 7
Sunday, June 8

Wisconsin public schools are in trouble. Cities and towns all over the state have raised property taxes to make up for the lack of funding from the state. If the legislature and governor don’t act NOW, things will only get worse: more budget shortfalls, bigger class sizes, less of the resources our kids need to learn, more cancelled school days.

WE DEMAND

  • 90% Sum Sufficient Special Education Reimbursement
  • Veto Any Budget with Less than 60%
  • No Decoupling, Keep Budgets Transparent
  • Free Nutritious and Fresh School Meals for All
  • End Public Revenue for Private Education

Public schools are required by law to make sure all kids have the tools they need to learn, but only 30% of the cost of funding for special education are covered by the state. Meanwhile, private schools get 90% of special ed costs covered by the state. That leaves public schools to pick up the slack with a huge hole in their budgets. This needs to stop! If the legislature sends Governor Evers a bad budget, he needs to take a stand, veto it, and force the legislature to send him something better. And we need to hold both him and the legislature accountable for their failure to do what’s right for the children of our state.
